Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are among the most devastating injuries, often leaving victims with lasting cognitive, physical and emotional challenges. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 69,000 TBI-related deaths occurred in the United States in 2021—about 190 deaths each day. The CDC notes that falls account for nearly half of TBI-related hospitalizations, while motor vehicle crashes and assaults are also significant causes. In Florida, TBIs frequently result from car crashes, slip and fall incidents, sports accidents and workplace injuries.
How TBIs Occur
- Motor vehicle accidents: Rear-end or head-on collisions can cause the brain to slam into the skull, even if there is no visible head wound.
- Falls: Slips, trips and falls—especially among older adults—can lead to brain bruising, bleeding or swelling. Falls are the leading cause of TBI-related hospitalization in the United States.
- Sports and recreational activities: Contact sports and high-impact activities can result in concussions and other TBIs.
- Workplace accidents: Construction workers and industrial employees are at risk of TBIs from falls, falling objects or equipment accidents.
Recognizing Symptoms
Symptoms of a TBI may not appear immediately. Warning signs include headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea, memory problems, mood changes and sensory issues (e.g., blurred vision or ringing in the ears). Severe TBIs can lead to coma, seizures, speech difficulties or paralysis. Always seek medical attention after any head injury, even if you feel fine initially.
Legal Considerations
If your brain injury resulted from another party’s negligence—such as a careless driver, negligent property owner or defective product—you may be entitled to compensation. Damages can include medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and long-term care. Souder Law works with neurologists, neuropsychologists and life-care planners to assess the full impact of TBIs. We gather evidence to show how the injury occurred and how it affects your quality of life. Our goal is to secure a settlement or verdict that pays for current and future needs.
